light the match, start the fire
A 45-60 second montage commercial showing all the typical trappings of an outdoor trip; the tent being unzipped, the JetBoil bubbling, the hiking boot as it traverses the stream and of course, the campfire. While showing all of these typical camping features, we don’t reveal the people, it’s completely anonymous until right the end, we reveal our adventurers to be black. This is to play on the typical viewers expectation of seeing white people in this setting. I’d like it to end on a campfire scene where there are more than just black people, to drive home the point of unity, inclusivity and a spirit of welcoming and solidarity.
Below is a very rough animatic of the idea.
“Sky above me, earth below me, fire within me.” - Unknown
Invitation is the sincerest flattery - Carolyn Wells
This is an invitation
An invitation to smell the morning
to taste adventure
To feel the mist of the falls
To chase the sun
To light the match
To start the fire
To Burn with Unity
visual inspiration
Below are some visual examples of the type of imagery, mood and content I want to create with this piece. This is to put what I’m planning into perspective and help visualize the end product I have in mind. I am aware of all the whiteness in my reference visuals. I guess that’s what we’re trying to change.
The below videos from REI has some great visuals combined with themes that overlap with the mission of BFCT.
wanna do this thing?
This project would be completed free of charge, as a means for me to create an example of the kind of films I want to create moving forward. With your help I’d love to refine the rough idea presented in this proposal. With your help I know we can tailor the themes and messaging to be more impactful. However it is important to me to not change the scope of this project. Since this would be a pro-bono project, I would need the help of BFCTA to pull this shoot off in terms of securing on-screen talent and help production coordination/communications.
If any of this sounds like a cool idea, please reach out to me so we can discuss further.
